The Differences Between Traditional Japanese Kimonos and Kimono Style Dresses
Kimono style dresses have gained popularity in the western world possibly due to the fascination westerners have on Japanese culture. Westerners are most fascinated by the culture of Geishas and with this comes the fascination with their attire.
Kimono style dresses are inspired by traditional Japanese kimonos but do not have the traditional obi. They are also typically made of a lighter fabric, and are usually shorter. These type of dresses borrow the V-neck cut and long sleeves. However, for wearability purposes, most of them have been shortened to the 3/4-arm length.
Kimono style dresses also usually incorporate the separate paneling seen on some kimonos, where the material differs on the ends of the arms, the waist, and the neckline. Also, for wearability and comfort, most of them are shorter in length, either above the knee, right on the knee, or slightly below the knee, whereas traditional kimonos usually are floor length.
